The Journal | Our Best Tips for Decorating a Small Space

Decorating a small space can be challenging; it can be difficult to get organised and make your personality shine through when you have very little space to be creative with. However, living in a small space certainly also has its own advantages - like concentrating on what truly matters, but that’s a whole different story.

Ok, let’s get to it. Here are my top tips for adding personality to a small space.

Add storage and only display your favourite things

First things first: you need to consider your storage solutions. Built-in closets and floor-to-ceiling shelves are a great way to get a lot of storage in a relatively small amount of space. Adding floor-to-ceiling shelves can furthermore make the ceiling appear higher than it actually is. To keep your shelves (and built-in closets) clutter free you can use boxes to store jumpers, socks, papers and everything else that aren't decorative.

Keep your bed free from 'stuff'

While we’re at it: I’m a firm believer that you get the best sleep if you don’t use the space underneath your bed as storage space (and the bed itself, of course). It’s tempting to buy big boxes and store everything you don’t need on a day to day basic under the bed, but having that free space under the bed does a lot for the overall feel in the space. Having too many things in a small space makes it appear even smaller.

Rethink your choice of furniture

A large sofa is a living room musthave to many people, however, we very often end up with furniture that are way too large for the room it's intended for. When choosing furniture for any room it is necessary to think twice about the size. To create a harmonic space you should often go for a smaller piece of furniture than you think.

When searching for furniture try to come up with different (less common) pieces of furniture that still has the same function - you could for example swap a sofa for a daybed.

Use natural materials and plants to create a calm space

When you live in a small space it’s even more important to create a space where you can relax. Using natural materials like cork, wood, and bamboo instantly make a space feel more calm and relaxing.

Speaking of the overall feel in a space, adding indoor plants is a nice and easy way to add life. Some plants have even proven to be good for the indoor environment. Try finding a big plant and use it as a natural focal point, just like you would do with an artwork.

Keep colours neutral

Neutral colours doesn’t mean no colours at all - quite the opposite. Adding the right colours and tones to a space can make it look bigger and more inviting. It somehow creates a flow in a home if you use tones that work well together; the trick here is to combine colours with a similar level of saturation (equally blackness), as it will give you a harmonic colour expression throughout your home.

Use wall mounted lamps or pendants lights

An easy trick for getting more floor space is to use only wall mounted lamps or pendants hanging from the ceiling. Another great thing with these types of lights is that they help creating small 'zones' by dividing the space into different areas.

Use colours and fabrics that tell people who you are

Colours and fabrics can say a lot about what type of person you are. Finding colours that are ‘you’ can transform a space and make it more personal and in line with what you believe in. Many paint companies give out free colour swatches for you to take home so you can get a sense of how a colour would look in your home.
